Zimbabwe: An International Emergency

Cholera has killed more than 600 people, and there are no signs this water borne disease is slowing down.  If anything it is and will continue to spread.  So far Robert Mugabe, the “elected” President of Zimbabwe, is doing little to stop the suffering of his people.  And why would he?  If more people die, there will be less people to intimidate in the next “election”.

The people of Zimbabwe have been facing poverty, starvation, and oppressive rule for many years now.  Inflation is at a level many of us struggle to completely understand.

Mugabe won in the run off “election” a few months ago against Morgan Tsvangirai.  I’m not sure even with the quotes I would characterize what they had as an election.  Rapes, beatings, and imprisonment followed Tsvangirai’s supporters.  Not even one month ago, more people were imprisoned for political reasons.

The African Nations need to step in.  The Kenyan Prime Minister has and continues to vocalize his disgust and call for Mugabee’s removal.  However, the South African President has remained an ally of Mugabe.   I’m not sure how he does this, but he does not appear to be faltering in his support of this psychopathic murdering dictator.  It is time the United Nations steps in, unless they are willing to become as ineffectual as I believe them to be.
