President Elect Obama has announced the new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development….Shaun Donovan. My initial thoughts were, who the Hell is that? Well, Mr. Donovan comes to us via New York, where he served as New York City’s Housing Commissioner. This job may wield more press and power than ever before though, with Americans in serious economic troubles. The CNN article states 1 in 10 home owners is in trouble! Yikes.
A more exciting announcement for me came earlier this week, with was the new Secretary of Energy. Steven Chu is a Nobel Prize winning experimental physicist with no political history! I love it!

I’ll admit, while I found this story to be a little amusing I can’t say I blame her. Apparently Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) took a call from President Elect Obama, thought it was a prank and promptly hung up the phone. Then she took a call from his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, and hung up on him too. It took a call from the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Howard Berman, and a test to make it happen.
Now we all had a good laugh at Sarah Palin when she took a call from a Canadian radio station pretending to be the French President…so I can’t say I blame Representative Ros-Lehtinen!

Uh…no kidding? I find this to be a little amusing. Not that we are in a recession, but that it’s been going on since December 2007, most Americans have been feeling the strain since before that, and now we finally admit it’s a recession.
According to Wikipedia, “In macreoeconomics, a recession is a decline in a country’s real gross domestic product (GDP), or negative real economic growth for four or more successive quarters of a year.”
The Bush White House is hoping to focus on the fix rather than the problem. I’m not sure I disagree. Although, I’m not sure what their plan really is at this point. Hell, for how long did the Republicans in office chose to stick their heads the sand hoping if you didn’t see it or speak it, it wasn’t true. The bailout isn’t working. Paulson is a disgrace. And they’re outta there in less than 2 months.
The new President Elect has his work cut out for him.

It appears Russia is back to resorting to Cold War tactics. Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s President, has warned President Elect Obama that if the US and NATO continue working towards building a missile shield Russia will move nuclear weapons into Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad borders Poland and Lithuania, and does not connect with the rest of Russia.
For some reason I doubt NATO and the European Union will be thrilled with that idea.
As we all know Dmitry Medvedev is Russia’s President in name only. It is pretty clear that Vladimir Putin is calling the shots.
My only question of President Elect Obama is: And can you tell me again why on earth you wanted this job???

Interesting and fun (well yes it is fun if you are a big political news reading dork like me) tool from CNN. Check it out. Not only do you get to fill remaining positions within the new Obama administration, but when you click on the pictures you get a little biography on each one.
Seriously, how is this not a good time???

Apparently Congress will be back at work early in the New Year. Typically they don’t start voting on anything till mid to late January. However this year they will be working on a huge economic stimulus package the new President wants.
Good.
